Revision is Good Writing
Less is More

I. Setting
Describe a setting in detail, write a full page. Where is it on earth? What does it look like? What does it feel like? Smell like? Is there a taste to it? Sound? Make it feel like we are immersed in the setting.

II. Characterization
Remember?
What they look like?
What they say?
What they do?
Where they live/work?
What do they think?
What do others think of them?
BUT ADD:
What is their fatal flaw(s)?

III. Plot & Triangles
Remember how it works: intro, rising action, climax & denouement?
Basically it's: problem, struggle, solution.
They must struggle at least 3 times before you succeed, or else no one will be able to suspend their disbelief.

IV. Short Stories
You want to start in on the problem/action immediately, catch our attention, & keep our attention. 1st drafts can be a page long (to keep control of the plot and make it easy to manipulate and change). If it's 40 pages… it could be 15 pages. Less is more. Paring down Cutting things to the bone is essential to good writing. See what I mean?

Here is a great list with inks to superb short stories:

V. Longer format stories
Short stories turn into chapters when you remove their conclusions which makes each chapter like its own story (stand alone & paced well), yet keeps the reader reading.

Prompts (Use these sentences as starters for your story if you want):
There was blood everywhere!
The cars engine revved loudly.
Gunfire in the distance
The smell of fire pulled me from sleep.
I hardly knew her name.
I was alone.
Lightening struck the...
Fire broke out...
My name is...
When his arm grew back...
Stop!
The moment I entered the house, I knew something was wrong.
